There’s something very alluring about the idea of being simply Christians, without signs, without labels, without divisions. If Christ is one, why so many denominations?<\/p>\n
Paul encountered something similar in Corinth. Some said, “I follow Paul”; others, “I follow Apollos”; others, “I follow Cephas”; and there were even those who said, “I follow Christ” (1 Corinthians 1:11-13). His response is well-known: Christ is not divided. But what’s interesting is what Paul doesn’t do. He doesn’t erase the differences between Paul and Apollos. Later, he’ll say: “I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow” (1 Corinthians 3:6).<\/p>\n
One planted. Another watered. God made it grow.<\/p>\n
Perhaps the problem was never the difference.<\/p>\n
The entire creation is made of differences. The body is made of different parts. The gifts are different. The services are different. Even before the Lamb, there remain peoples, tribes, and languages (Revelation 7:9). Unity, in the Bible, doesn’t seem to mean monotony.<\/p>\n
Denominations carry sins, ruptures, pride, and a lot of unresolved history. It would be naive to deny that. But they also carry memory, convictions, struggles, distinct ways of serving, and questions that needed to be answered in the concrete life of the Church.<\/p>\n
Perhaps we don’t need to choose between unity and identity.<\/p>\n
Perhaps we just need to remember which one occupies the center.<\/p>\n
Not Paul. Not Apollos. Not the church sign.<\/p>\n
Christ crucified.<\/p>\n
